How to calculate a percentage
A percentage is a number out of 100. The three questions people ask most are:
- X% of Y: multiply Y by X, divide by 100. 15% of 200 = 200 x 15 / 100 = 30.
- X is what % of Y: divide X by Y, multiply by 100. 30 is 30 / 200 x 100 = 15% of 200.
- Percent change: subtract the old value from the new, divide by the old, multiply by 100. From 200 to 250 is (250 - 200) / 200 x 100 = 25% increase.
Percentage tips
To find a quick 10%, move the decimal one place left (10% of 240 is 24). For a tip or discount, find 10% then scale: 20% is double the 10%, 5% is half of it. To reverse a percentage (a price after X% off), divide by (1 minus the percent as a decimal).
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 30% of 150 is 150 x 30 / 100 = 45.
How do I find what percent one number is of another?
Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 150 is 45 / 150 x 100 = 30%.
How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?
Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original, then multiply by 100. A rise from 150 to 180 is (180 - 150) / 150 x 100 = 20% increase.
